Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites

Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites
Publisher: CRC | Pages: 400 | 2006-11-20 | ISBN: 0824758293 | PDF | 7 MB

Product Description:

Although the use of composites has increased in many industrial, commercial, medical, and defense applications, there is a lack of technical literature that examines composites in conjunction with concrete construction. Fulfilling the need for a comprehensive, explicit guide, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites presents specific information necessary for designing concrete structures with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites as a substitute for steel reinforcement and for using FRP fabrics to strengthen concrete members. In a reader-friendly, design-oriented manner, this book discusses the analysis, design, durability, and serviceability of concrete members reinforced with FRP. The authors first introduce the elements that constitute composites-the structural constituent and matrix-and discuss how composites are manufactured. Following an examination of the durability of FRP composites that contain fibers, such as glass, carbon, or aramid, the book illustrates how FRP external reinforcement systems (FRP-ER) can be used for enhancing the strength and stiffness of concrete structures using theory and design principles. The concluding chapter concentrates on serviceability aspects of concrete members internally reinforced with FRP. An excellent resource of design and construction practices, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites is a state-of-the-art reference on concrete members reinforced with FRP.

Polymers in Cementitious Materials

Michelle Miller, "Polymers in Cementitious Materials"
Smithers Rapra Press | 2008-04-22 | ISBN: 1859574912 | 192 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

"The construction industry increasingly requires products that are cost effective and easy to use, to enable fast track application whilst achieving a high physical performance. Incorporating a polymer in a cementitious mix brings key advantages, particularly in terms of workability, abrasion and impact resistance, with the resulting physical and chemical properties dependent upon the nature of the polymer material and the quantity used in relation to the cement phase.

This Rapra Handbook is intended to provide an insight into the uses of polymers within the construction industry. It describes the conception of polymer-modified cementitious materials through to the array of polymer-based or polymer-modified material utilised in modern day construction.

It not only covers the use of polymers in direct combination with cement but polymer concrete, impregnation of polymers into the concrete substrate and other polymer-based products, (i.e., coatings and adhesives). Both natural and synthetic polymers are reviewed.

This book is aimed at all those who are working with cement, and also at anyone who needs more information about this most versatile of materials, offering insight into:

the common polymers used in cementitious materials polymer concrete polymer Portland cement concrete reinforcement using synthetic fibres adhesives and coatings "

Organic Electronics (Advances in Polymer Science)
Springer | 2009-11-16 | ISBN: 3642045375 | 328 pages | PDF | Price: $339.00 | 8 MB

The strengths of semiconducting polymers are currently mainly unfolding incheap and easily assembled thin film transistors, light emitting diodes, and organicsolar cells. The use of so-called “plastic chips” ranges from lightweight, portabledevices over large-area applications to gadgets demanding a degree of mechanicalflexibility, which would overstress conventional devices based on inorganic, perfectcrystals. The field of organic electronics has evolved quite dynamically during thelast few years; thus consumer electronics based on molecular semiconductors hasgained sufficient market attractiveness to be launched by the major manufacturersin the recent past.

Surfaces and Interfaces of Liquid Crystals

Theo Rasing "Surfaces and Interfaces of Liquid Crystals"
Springer | English | 2004-11-18 | ISBN: 3540207899 | 410 pages | PDF | 18,3 MB

The aim of this book is to describe the recent progress in our understanding of the surface and interface properties of the substrate-liquid crystal interface that play an essential role in the operation of liquid crystal displays (LCD?s) and other LC devices. Every LC electro-optic device is based on the controllable anchoring of LC molecules on a (polymer coated) solid.
The microscopic understanding of the interaction between a macromolecule (liquid crystal, polymer) and a wall is also a major scientific problem that, despite its technological importance and thirty years of research, is still poorly understood. The main reason for this was the lack of surface sensitive techniques that could probe interfaces at the proper molecular level. Therefore most attention was directed to understand the bulk properties whereas interface properties were only addressed by macroscopic, empirical studies like wetting and spreading.
In 1998 we started a collaborative effort between several European Laboratories to study the liquid crystal interfaces with novel, surface and interface-sensitive experimental techniques, such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Linear and Nonlinear Optical Microscopy and (Dynamic) Light Scattering (DLS). These experimental techniques were complemented with computer simulations and supra molecular chemistry methods to develop controllable polymeric surfaces.
The main goals of the project were:
1. to obtain a microscopic understanding of the liquid crystal-wall interactions on a molecular level.
2. to understand how these interface properties can determine the long range ordering and properties of LC devices.
3. to study how this understanding can be exploited to manipulate the relevant interface properties, in order to control LC-based devices.

After 5 years we can state that we more than fulfilled our original goals. In particular the development of the Scanning Probe methods and the parallel progress in theory have largely contributed to our deeper understanding of the liquid crystal wall interactions on a molecular level. The present book will try to give an overview of the state of the art of our understanding of the liquid crystal-surface interactions on a molecular level.

Biorelated Polymers: Sustainable Polymer Science and Technology by Emo Chiellini

Biorelated Polymers: Sustainable Polymer Science and Technology by Emo Chiellini (Repost)
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (September 1, 2001) | ISBN: 030646652X | 400 pages | PDF | 15.1 Mb

This book includes papers on polymeric materials from renewable resources known as `Biorelated Polymers and Plastics', and issues are bound to their utilization and environmental impact in their production, conversions to manufacts and ultimate disposal of post-costume manufacts. Modern industrial developments inspired by the new concepts of sustainability and ecocompatibility require a deeper attention to renewable resources as a new--old source of raw material and feedback.

This new trend, occurring not only in industrialized countries but also in emerging countries and countries in transition, thoroughly permeates the polymer and plastic industry, due to the big impact that those materials have on the modern way of life. Plastic waste, specifically that stemming from segments of packaging, containers for solids and liquids and single use items, is attracting much effort from municipality officers, producers and converters, aimed at finding a harmonized solution among the various options available for their appropriate management. In this respect, polymeric materials of natural origin (biopolymers), as well as materials from renewable resources useable for the production of monomeric precursors, or semi-synthetic polymeric materials, constitute a focal point for future industrial development in the production of polymers and plastics. The present book contains much valuable information and scientific hints on a modern approach aimed at designing processes and products with minimal negative environmental impact.

Plastics Additives - An A-Z Reference by G. Pritchard and Geoffrey Pritchard

Plastics Additives - An A-Z Reference by G. Pritchard and Geoffrey Pritchard
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (December 13, 2007) | ISBN: 041272720X | Pages: 656 | PDF | 34 MB

Although plastics are extremely successful commercially, they would never reach acceptable performance standards either in properties or processing without the incorporation of additives. With the inclusion of additives, plastics can be used in a variety of areas competing directly with other materials, but there are still many challenges to overcome. Some additives are severely restricted by legislation, others interfere with each other--in short their effectiveness varies with circumstances. Plastics Additives explains these issues in an alphabetical format making them easily accessible to readers, enabling them to find specific information on a specific topic. Each additive is the subject of one or more articles, providing a suffinct account of each given topic.

An international group of experts in additive and polymer science, from many world class companies and institutes, explain the recent rapid changes in additive technology. They cover novel additives (scorch inhibitors, compatibilizers, surface-modified particulates etc.), the established varieties (antioxidants, biocides, antistatic agents, nucleating agents, fillers, fibres, impact modifiers, plasticizers) and many others, the articles also consider environmental concerns, interactions between additives and legislative change. With a quick reference guide and introductory articles that provide the non-specialist and newcomer with relevant information, this reference book is essential reading for anyone concerned with plastics and additives.

Handbook of Thermodynamic Data of Copolymer

CRC Handbook of Thermodynamic Data of Copolymer Solutions by Christian Wohlfarth
Publisher: CRC Press | 1 edition (April 26, 2001) | ISBN: 0849310741 | Pages: 520 | PDF | 2 MB

Thermodynamic data are essential to understanding the physical behavior of copolymer solutions, intermolecular interactions, and the molecular nature of mixtures. As such, they form the basis for developing theoretical thermodynamic models, and knowledge of this data is necessary for countless industrial and laboratory processes. Until now, however, accessing this information meant long and tedious searches through the original literature. The Handbook of Thermodynamic Data of Copolymer Solutions is the world's first comprehensive source of this vital data.

Author Christian Wohlfarth, a chemical thermodynamicist specializing in phase equilibria of polymer and copolymer solutions and a respected contributor to the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, has gathered up-to-the-minute data from more than 300 literature sources. Fully committed to ensuring the reliability of the data, the author included results in the handbook only if numerical values were published or if authors provided their numerical results by personal communication.
